Abstract

This paper presents a preliminary evaluation of the water quality in the ponds at Raden Intan State Islamic University of Lampung, Indonesia, specifically focusing on its potential as an early indicator of heavy metal contamination. These ponds are essential components of the campus's water management strategy, primarily for rainwater collection, irrigation, education, and aesthetic purposes. The potential for heavy metal contamination arises from diffuse non-point sources like urban runoff, atmospheric deposition, and surrounding anthropogenic activities. The study employed a review of established water quality parameters (pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Elictrical Conductivity (EC), salinity, Specific Gravity (SG), and Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)). Results indicate that while general physicochemical parameters may fall within tolerable limits, the presence of these ponds in an urban environment necessitates continuous monitoring for heavy metals, as their non-biodegradable nature poses long-term ecological and potential human health risks. This preliminary evaluation establishes the crucial need for a comprehensive, long-term monitoring program.
